A beautiful day led into a beautiful evening, the theme of which was “If the World is my Stage, what am I presenting?” We welcomed our returning guests Carol and Harvey, both with Jim who delivered his Ice Breaker, and also for their second visit Howard, Noriko and their friend Masa, who was a first-time visitor. Thanks for visiting us again!
We were also very pleased to welcome Mahesh and his wife Nita, who brought their 15-year-old daughter Prakruti to speak to us. Thank you also for visiting!
Lydia was our very elegant Chair for the evening, and thanks for the business cards and chocolates you left with the agendas. Lydia, the consummate toastmaster, gave her usual flair to the meeting, and everyone kept to theme.
Margot as Grammarian offered the word of the day: Articulate (v.): able to speak, to express oneself readily and effectively. Example: “She won the contract because she articulated her company’s viewpoint very clearly.” Used quite frequently during the evening, articulate was a most appropriate word for toastmasters!
Troy D. as our Table Topics Master gave four scenarios on which members spoke, including requirements of a leader, explaining human communication, whether religion and politics are appropriate or inappropriate topics, and the meaning of equality. Maureen won the Best Table Topics Award for her explanation of requirements of a leader. Maurice very ably evaluated Table Topics.
Grace delivered the second project towards the Competent Leader and is to be congratulated on this; not only has Grace achieved her goal of CTM/CL, but also the club has achieved another goal, bringing our President’s Distinguished to Ten Goals!! Congratulations Tillicum!
The Best Speaker Award went to Jim, one of our newest members who delivered his Ice Breaker. Nice going Jim, and we look forward to hearing more from you! John won the Best Evaluator Award for his evaluation of Jim’s speech. Congratulations to all winners.
Mahesh had been in contact with the club to ask if we could evaluate Prakruti, who has been pursuing her own speaking endeavours and has advanced to the final stage of an oratorical contest. She will now represent British Columbia in the Northwest Pacific Optimist Oratorical Contest to be held in Richland, WA this coming Saturday, May 20, 2006. The winners from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Alaska will also be there, so this is a very high level of speaking for someone so young to achieve.
Prakruti spoke so well in her five-minute speech entitled “My future is bright because…”. She possessed many of the qualities needed for public speaking and we were pleased to write our personal evaluations for her. Congratulations Prakruti on advancing to your award-winning level, and we wish you much success this weekend and in future events.
A reminder that the executive meets on Thursday evening, May 18, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. in the Plaskett Room at New Westminster Public Library.
There is no meeting on May 22nd due to the holiday, so we look forward to seeing you at Tillicum on Monday, May 29, 2006; please check the Assigned Roles and Calendar of Events to see what’s in store!
Best wishes,
