At long last summer has arrived!! We heralded this occasion by having another great turnout and welcomed our guests Alanna (Sue's daughter visiting from Oslo, Norway), and Andrew (a member of a corporate club in Richmond); glad to hear you both enjoyed your visit. Angela and Allan of Golden Eagle Club in Burnaby also joined us on this special occasion. It was also good to see our YAMs Naveen and Susannah, and her young brother Thomas. We know how much you value your experiences at these meetings and, as a result, are glad to see your own deve
lopment.
lopment. George was our Chair for the evening and he did an excellent job, as befits his tenure as a toastmaster. The theme of the evening was the alluring "If I Ruled the World" and everyone had wonderful insight into this.
Our theme was all the more illuminated by Kumar, as Grammarian, who chose the word of the day: Ameliorate: to make better, to improve, to grow better. Example: "In every human being there is a wish to ameliorate his/her own condition." Such an appropriate word, as was evidenced by the suggestions given by all to make our world a better place!
Neil was tremendous as Table Topics Master and kept very much to the theme, which was so well responded to by all five contestants. It was Trish who took the Best Table Topics Speaker Award for her factual and poignant stance on the courageous work and integrity of Chuck Cadman, who died recently.
Carol, as Table Topics Evaluator gave fine evaluations and took the Best Evaluator Award. Congratulations to both winners!
Then Barb, as Toastmaster, welcomed our special guest Angela, as she delivered the speech she is perfecting to present at the International Speech Contest in Toronto on August 27th. We were all thrilled with this and wish Angela every good wish and much success - if she wins this contest she will be regarded as Toastmasters' best public speaker in the world!
To help Angela financially, there will be a fund-raising picnic on Sunday, July 24th in Burnaby. Details of this are being sent out by e-mail to all members. Please try to attend this event to help Angela in her quest.
