It was another Dark and Stormy Night, but this did not deter so many members and guests alike from venturing to our second meeting of the year! We welcomed our first time guests Dawn, Heidi, Geoff, and Kerri Ann and Damian, and our returning guest Carla. Good to see you and to hear that you enjoyed the meeting.
Kuldip R., who is a dual member with Tillicum, Chaired the meeting, the theme of which is What Freedom Means to Me; Martin Luther King’s Birthday. Kuldip did an admirable job and maintained the theme of the evening throughout.
Kuldip gave us the word of the day: Illuminate (v.) - to light up, to clarify, to enlighten. Example: “Let’s illuminate our minds with the knowledge that we all came from the same source.” Used so frequently throughout the evening, the word of the day found its way into many conversations! In Leona’s absence through illness (get well soon), Troy quickly jumped into the role of Grammarian – many thanks Troy!
Carol demonstrated her creative skills in her role as Table Topics Master, and kept to the theme of Freedom. Such able members who rose to the occasion in standing on their feet for about two minutes or so!! The Best Table Topics Award went to Lydia, for her beautiful rendition of her reasons for winning the Nobel Peace Prize in counselling us that when confronted with adversity to seek the good in others and within ourselves. Well done Lydia!
Maureen as Toastmaster introduced our two speakers: Tom with his 5th speech and Mary with her 5th speech, for which both Tom and Mary were awarded certificates. As well, Anita received a club certificate for achieving her Competent Toastmaster status. Congratulations to all three!
Mary won the Best Speaker Award for the Oratorical Speech – the fifth project in the Interpretive Reading Advanced Manual. This is not an easy project, but a challenging one, and Mary was true to the evening in reading Martin Luther King’s Freedom Speech; how powerful and so memorable. Well done Mary! For his evaluation of Mary’s speech, Alex won the Best Evaluator Award. Congratulations to all winners.
Speaking of Mary, just a reminder that she will be spearheading Speechcraft at New Westminster Secondary School. This course starts on Thursday, January 19, 2006 for eight weeks. Your help is needed in working with the ten people already registered for this course, so please contact Mary and offer your services!
We meet again on Monday, January 30, when the theme will be “Are you ready for the Year of the Dog?” Of course, don’t forget to be at the club to hear our guest speaker from Vancouver Police Department: a ten-minute presentation with a five-minute Question and Answer period. Not one to miss.
There is no meeting on January 23, so exercise the freedom you have to vote, and wait with bated breath for the results!!
See you on the 30th!
