Meeting of Monday, January 9, 2006

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!” was the resounding welcome between members for our first meeting of 2006, which was so well attended. We welcomed our first-time guests: Carla, Ian, Susanne, Troy, and Vikram. Thank you for visiting and pleased to hear you enjoyed your first-time visit to a Toastmaster’s club, and choosing Tillicum.

Chris F did a great job as Chair of the meeting, the theme of which was Memories of Holiday Seasons Past. The Round Table Introductions of members and guests alike provided an assortment of memories, some happy and some not so happy.

The latter kept in line with the word of the day, provided by Barb as Grammarian: Melancholy – meaning thoughtful or gentle sadness, gloom. Example: “His melancholy began soon after the arrival of the first post-holiday VISA bill!” Yes, we can all relate to that, and much good use was made of Melancholy and its derivatives during the meeting!

Troy D, who is now our Sergeant at Arms for the January-June 2006 portion was unfortunately unable to attend for his role of Jokemaster. However, we were all pleasantly surprised by Troy C., our first-time guest, for rising to the occasion and jumping in to deliver his own brand of humour! Nice going Troy – you seemed to enjoy yourself too, and we hope you can provide us with jocular moments in the coming weeks!

Antonella was a great Table Topics Master and offered five situations on the holidays theme, all ably addressed by the five contestants. The Best Table Topics Award went to Lutz, who delivered a heartwarming description of his Christmastime at Whistler; not quite what he expected but nonetheless brought out the warmth of Christmas! Congratulations Lutz – and good to see you back at the club following an absence devoted to your other worthwhile cause – Habitat for Humanity.

Kuldip R., recently inducted to the club and a dual member (with a Delta Toastmaster’s club) was our Toastmaster for the evening. While two speakers were scheduled only one was present – David C, who delivered his third speech. An avid Self-Defence trainer, Dave prepared an entertaining, animated and informative speech on different types of bikes and their suitability – great job Dave. We were all pleased to see Anita filling in the void by delivering her 10th speech, on Becoming Extroverted – and achieving her Competent Toastmaster status. Congratulations Anita and thanks for taking this leap and concluding your manual – what a great job. This too gives another goal to the club, for a total of five goals, making Tillicum a Distinguished Club thus far. Congratulations Tillicum!

Dave C. won the Best Speaker Award and Maureen the Best Evaluator Award for her evaluation of Anita’s speech. Congratulations to all winners!

We next meet on January 16 when Kuldip R. will be Chair – so please give him your support as he fulfills this role for the first time at Tillicum. The theme is: What Freedom Means to Me – Martin Luther King’s Birthday.

There will be no meeting on January 23, as the Hall will be used as a polling station.

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Do attend on January 30th when we welcome a guest speaker, a Constable with the Vancouver Police Department, who will deliver a 10-minute presentation with a five minute question and answer period. The topic will be: Reducing Police Response Time to Priority One Calls in the City of Vancouver. This presentation will be a precursor to a much larger presentation the Constable makes on February 5th, so we are again pleased to welcome a member of a police department to Tillicum. Maurice will provide an individual evaluation and you are also welcome to provide your evaluation input. Should be a great evening – and it’s also a Grab Bag night – so come prepared for any eventuality!!

Look forward to seeing you on January 16th!

Best wishes,
