Meeting of Monday, February 6, 2006

Another great turnout of members and guests alike this evening; thank you all for visiting!

We welcomed our first-time guests Barbara, Sheila (with Georgia from ASK Advanced Speakers Club) and Lindsey, and our returning guests Carla, Ian and Nicholas; great to have you with us and thank for your positive guest comments.

What to do on a long winter night was the theme of the evening, very eloquently chaired by Sue. Well done Sue on this attempt to chair, and you kept the meeting on theme and on time!!

Dave C. as Grammarian offered the word of the day Inertia (n.): a tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged. Example: “The bureaucratic inertia of governments prevents anything from getting done!” A great word that was so appropriate to the theme of the evening – who wants to do anything on a long winter night???, and was used quite often during the meeting. Thanks Dave for your excellence as Grammarian.

It was good to see Lydia again, as she so ably took on the role of Table Topics Master – offering five different scenarios for chasing away the winter blues. Excellent responses from the five members chosen, and the Best Table Topics Award went to David C for his wonderful idea to extend a helping hand to those in need, by contacting former President Jimmy Carter to help him with his work for Habitat for Humanity and on those long winter nights provide shelter in areas devastated by hurricanes and earthquakes. Again, well done Dave!

Tom won the Best Speaker Award in completing his 9th speech (8th in the manual) on applying visual aids to a presentation. An excellent job Tom and well deserving of your award; having completed your penultimate speech, you now have only one to go and you will achieve your CTM. Look forward to that next week!! Maureen won the Best Evaluator Award for evaluating Tom’s speech. Congratulations to all winners!

Next week will see Brian as our Chair, so please help him fill roles for the February 13th meeting, with the oh-so-appropriate theme of: The Love of My Life.
Should be exciting and rewarding as both Grace and Tom will hopefully complete their respective 10th speeches and attain their Competent Toastmaster designation.

Hope to see you on the 13th!
Best wishes,
