Meeting of Monday, November 20, 2006

A very full house tonight, after our break following the Remembrance Day weekend. Such a wonderful turnout in which we welcomed our first-time guest Anita and returning guests Anne, Collette, Wendy, and Rod. Thank you all for visiting.

Lots to report this evening: Both Anne and Rod, after only a few visits, completed their membership application and we welcome you as members of Tillicum Toastmasters! Thank you and congratulations on your decision to join our club – we will be there for you on your Toastmaster experience!

As well, with the addition of these two new members, we have now reached eight new members since July 1st and achieved another goal - and as our forms have been sent to Toastmasters International on time, we have achieved another goal, bringing us to seven goals in the President's Distinguished Club program, so now we are Select Distinguished! Congratulations Tillicum! Please click here to see the progress of our goals!

Brian, our very congenial Chair, led the meeting the theme of which was: Tall Tales Night. Lots of tall tales throughout the evening, which added to the usual banter and goodwill.

Sue
as our Grammarian, offered Fabricate (v.) as the word of the day. Meaning: to invent a story or lie. Example: "The story he told was a complete fabrication of what had actually happened." We fabricated very well during the evening with lots of tall tales and fabricated stories!

During the business meeting chaired by Rosemary, there was an induction of two new members. After we had voted on agreeing to their acceptance into Tillicum, Carol inducted both Lily and Sheila – so you are officially members of Tillicum (and now available for Table Topics!!) Well done!

Speaking of same, Maurice as Table Topics Master, came up with a wonderful assortment of scenarios in which the five contenders were at liberty to be very tall-tailed! Troy stole our votes for Best Table Topics Speaker with a wonderful explanation of what he found in his attic belonging to his grandfather. A mirror, no less – but this was no ordinary mirror. With shades of Chronicles of Narnia, Troy looked at his own reflection and then saw his grandfather!! He walked through the mirror to meet his grandfather who told him he was descended from Egyptian royalty. So Troy is our Pharaoh of the month!!! Well done Troy on such great imagery and conviction!!

Following the break our two program speakers were Karen and Mary. Karen, with her 4th project from the Communication and Leadership Manual, won the Best Speaker Award and is continually showing us how well she is benefiting from Toastmasters. Not half way through the manual and already are the signs of a very competent and natural speaker. The Best Evaluator Award went to Carol for her evaluation of Mary’s speech – congratulations to all winners!!

Don’t forget to mark December 11 on your calendar for our Christmas Party. We will again have a gift exchange (no more than $10) and it would be a kind gesture to also bring along a non-perishable donation towards the food bank. A list is being kept of the potluck goodies you are bringing, so please contact Antonella to advise her of your contribution!!!

Next meeting is Monday, November 27 – this will be an evening of speeches so there is no theme (and no Table Topics; such a relief!). However, there will be a Chair (Tom), Toastmaster (Susan) and General Evaluator (Jim). As well, at least six participants in Speechcraft will attend to receive their Nickel Awards!

Sounds like another great evening is ahead for you, so please come out and support our speakers who are working hard to achieve their goals!

See you on the 27th!
Maureen
