Meeting of Monday, November 6, 2006

Another tremendous turnout at the club this evening, and it was especially nice to welcome three first-time guests: Wendy, Mohammed and Rod, and our returning guest Anne. Thanks so much for attending, especially following one of the wettest weekends in some time!!

Harvey joined Tillicum earlier this year and tonight was his initial role as Chair, which he conducted with the same aplomb as his other duties at the club – nicely done Harvey! A great theme this evening: My Favourite Detective, and club members and guests all contributed descriptions and anecdotes of their favourite detectives!!

Maurice, as our Grammarian, gave a most appropriate word of the day: Deduce (v.) to reach a conclusion by reasoning. Example: “From the evidence, the detective deduced the butler had done it!” Deduce, deduction and other derivatives all played a big role in expressing the word of the day, which was well used by members and guests!

Ken was our Table Topics Master, and presented five situations representing known sleuths of the silver screen and TV – all well conducted, and it was Tom in his version of Lieutenant Columbo (minus raincoat), who walked off fingers on forehead with the Best Table Topics Award – well done Tom and Ken!

How refreshing to see a brand new member jump into the Icebreaker – the first project in the Competent Communicator handbook!! Kudos to Lily, who told us of herself and family in a most entertaining and eloquent manner – thanks for stepping out of your “comfort zone” so early in your Toastmaster experience!! Rosemary, who is going through the CTM projects again, won the Best Speaker Award for the 2nd speech in this manual, which was evaluated by Susan, who won the Best Evaluator Award. Congratulations to all winners.

As next Monday, November 13 is a statutory holiday for Remembrance Day (Saturday, November 11), we will not hold a meeting. Our next meeting is November 20.

An important reminder: The Fall Conference at the Hilton Hotel, Metrotown, is next weekend, Friday November 17 to Sunday 19. It is really shaping up to be an exciting event and we encourage you to attend. To remind you of this, David Brooks has sent out an audio postcard; please listen to it here, and register online while you still have time. The hotel needs to know by November 14 how many meals to prepare, so the registration cuts off at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, November 13 – so PLEASE REGISTER NOW!!!

Hope to see you at the Conference!!
Best wishes,
