Meeting of Monday, March 26, 2007

Time Management and an Evening of Speeches were the hot topics of tonight’s meeting, and what a full house we had! We welcomed our first-time guests Sacha and Margaret, Brad and his wife Joelle, and members of Speechcraft, who have recently completed their eight-week course. Congratulations to you all and thank you for visiting. Thanks too to Daniel who made a return visit to the club. Glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves!

Our Chair for the evening was Grace, who has also been very involved with Speechcraft and has been shadowing the Area 80 Governor, to perhaps resume this role on July 1st. Thank you Grace for your efforts on this very active and involved evening!

Troy, who recently recently became a father for the first time, graced us with his presence as Grammarian, and chose the word of the day: Sagacious (adj.) meaning keen and farsighted penetration and judgment. Example: “Due to her shrewd nature, she was a sagacious judge of character.” Used somewhat during the evening, especially during the roundtable introductions, sagacious is another excellent word to add to our vocabulary!!

Grace gave an Education Session in which she Spoke in Praise of Tom and his role as Coordinator of the last Speechcraft Program; nicely done Grace, and congratulations Tom on such a good job. The Speechcrafters received their certificates as did Susan, Julie and Grace for their assistance during the program. Maureen won the Best Evaluator Award for her evaluation of Grace’s speech.

Ken took on the role of Table Topics Master, and presented four excellent scenarios related to time, including the nasty little creepy creatures Time Flies, reflecting on the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, reminding us of Michael J Fox in Back to the Future, and it was Lydia who won the Best Table Topics Award for her figurative and eloquent rendition of A Stitch in Time. Congratulations Lydia!

Lily took on her first-time role of Toastmaster and did a fine job, more so because this was an evening of speeches, three of whom were our newer members: Tracey with #2, Albert #4 and Karen #7, ranging from Poverty and Homelessness to The Perfect Diet, to Buddhist Philosophy. How thought provoking and enlightening these speakers were, with excellent deliveries. The Best Speaker Award went to Tom, for his Speaking to Inform speech relating to our roles as Toastmasters. Tom handed out notes on Effective Public Speaking:
- Get audience attention
- Be energetic
- Structure
- Transitions
- Tell story
- Include visual aids
- Delivery: eye contact, WOW factor, humor, summarize making points
- A call to action

Congratulations Tom on a great speech, and congratulations to all winners.

Please join us on Monday, April 2nd, as we celebrate Tillicum’s 45th Birthday!

See you on the 2nd!
Best wishes,
