Meeting of Monday, April 23, 2007

We returned to our regular meeting schedule in great form, and what better way to do this than have Maurice chair the meeting with the lighthearted theme of Disney Night!

We welcomed our first-time guests Gertrude and Tracy, and returning guests Allyson, Brad and John. Thanks so much for visiting. Thank you too John who, on your second visit completed your application form and cheque, and joined Tillicum Toastmasters. Welcome and congratulations! We look forward to helping you reach your goals and wish you much success!

Maurice directed the meeting with much humour, great bridging, and won our approval for the most appropriately attired Toastmaster, sporting a great Disneyland black sweater and mouse ears – complete with sparkly pink scarf – how fitting for your role!! As usual, well done Maurice!

Anne as Grammarian proffered a fitting word of the day: Enthrall, meaning enchant, captivate, enrapture, thrill; example: “The children were enthralled by the parade.” So appropriate, and often used to fit in with many scenarios throughout the evening. Thanks Anne!

Lutz led a mini education session and described the techniques and strategies Angela delivered in her winning speech at the Division J contest on April 16. Watching an accomplished and award-winning speaker helps everyone learn and focus on aspects of speaking to enhance our own goals.

Vic, in his first-time role as Table Topics Master, did an excellent and well-prepared job in presenting five scenarios relating to Disney. These ranged from showing Walt Disney around your home town to taking on the role of a Disney character. Lydia took the Best Table Topics Speaker award with her choice of Home Alone, to which she compared the antics of her own little eight-year old boy! Well done Lydia!

Following the break, Albert as Toastmaster did well in his first-time attempt at this role, which equates to that of a mini-chair, so quite a daunting task for a new member. Thanks Albert for rising to the occasion!

Our two program speakers were Michelle, who completed her 10th speech, and Tom, who is about to complete his ATM Silver. Tom took the Best Speaker Award, and Michelle achieved her Competent Communicator award. This is such a wonderful achievement for Michelle, who came to us from Speechcraft and has completed the remaining four speeches in record time. Not only is she now a Competent Communicator but she was also a contestant at the division level, so a tremendous achievement. Congratulations to both Tom and Michelle!

The Best Evaluator Award went to Julie for her evaluation of Michelle’s speech. Congratulations to all winners!

Maureen in her General Evaluation mentioned the upcoming production of “Moon over Buffalo”. Those wishing to see this comedy can e-mail Maureen, and please see the link for this at the top of Tillicum Links. It will be a fun night out, so do take advantage of supporting a New Westminster theatre group.

Join us again next Monday, April 30, when Ken chairs our meeting with the theme Hindsight. Please help him as he calls on you to complete roles.

Best wishes,
