Another full house this evening and we welcomed Abby, our returning guest, and towards the end of the evening, Young joined us and asked to become a member!! Young had originally participated in Speechcraft in 2005 and visited Tillicum on one occasion. Such a pleasant surprise to see him, and delighted to hear that he has elected to join Tillicum – so Young, welcome to Tillicum – your membership will begin in July 2007 and you will be the first new member of the new year! Congratulations, and we look forward to helping you in your Toastmaster experience!
Margot, Chaired the meeting and, as always, did an exemplary job while keeping to the full agenda, the theme of which was Something Strange in the Neighbourhood. Good bridging throughout and well done Margot!
Rod as Grammarian chose Macabre (adj.) as the word of the day: grim, gruesome, with the amusing example: “The Ghostbusters were engaged in a macabre encounter with a slime monster!” Despite this gruesome example, the word of the day was tastefully integrated into the evening’s vocabulary. Nicely done Rod!
At the start of the business meeting, Susan, as acting president and incumbent president, graciously brought the outgoing executive to the lectern and presented each member with a certificate praising their work during 2006 to 2007. The incoming executive was then introduced to the club and both events met with loud applause!! Thanks Susan!
In continuing the business meeting, hosted by Margot, the motion by Maureen tabled last week was put to the vote and carried, to implement a listing of speakers who hope to speak on future weeks, even though the main sign up sheet may be full. Perhaps having other speakers to draw on will ensure that we always have a full evening of speakers. Please see Speakers in Waiting! in the links to the left. As well, Margot suggested that perhaps an Evening of Speeches take place once a month, to accommodate those who wish to speak, and this sounds like a good idea!! We shall see how this new element works out and improvise, as needed.
During the business meeting, a request for an assistant to the Sergeant at Arms was made. Pleased to advise that one of our latest members, John, has since agreed to assist Ken in his role as Sergeant at Arms. Thank you John for volunteering; the executive looks forward to working with you.
A reminder to the executive that Division J training takes place on Thursday, June 21st in the Auditorium of the New Westminster Public Library commencing 7 p.m., closing before 9 p.m.
No Table Topics during this Evening of Speeches, and there was a full line-up of speakers: Julie CC #9, Albert CC #10, Michelle ACB #1, and Tom ACS #3 – wonderful speeches, all so different and accomplished. The Best Speaker Award went to Tom for Speaking in Praise Of … and Maureen won the Best Evaluator Award for her evaluation of Michelle’s speech. Congratulations to both winners!
We were particularly pleased last evening to see Albert complete his 10th speech!! Congratulations Albert on becoming a Competent Communicator! You have done so well in your short time at the club and have methodically and confidently approached each project since you joined on January 15th – you are to be commended for working so diligently towards your goals!!
With this goal, Tillicum is now a President’s Distinguished Club, keeping its long record of being one of the strongest clubs in District 21! Well done Tillicum!
Lutz will chair the June 25 meeting: Live to Work or Work to Live – great theme! Please do visit us next Monday, and assist Lutz as he calls on you to fill roles!
Best wishes,
