Meeting of Monday, January 7, 2008

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!

Our first meeting of 2008 got off to a grand start – in quite different surroundings! There was a heating problem in the church hall, so we were invited into the sanctuary – and what a lovely environment to herald in the New Year! Surrounded by angels, Faith, Peace and Love, we enjoyed our first get together following a month’s absence, and adapted to our new-found surroundings very easily!

We welcomed our first-time guests Steph and Peter and returning guest Theresa. Thanks for visiting and for your warm and positive comments. We welcome you as our guests and probable members at future meetings!

Rosemary, a seasoned Toastmaster, was our Chair and did a masterful job of preparing the agenda and kept the meeting to theme (What I did over the Christmas vacation) and on time, especially as we had a full agenda.

Anita, as Grammarian, offered repose as the word of the day. Meaning a state of freedom, Anita gave the example “Most parents may have enjoyed the repose of the return to their normal life, like the calm after the storm.” While “repose” was used sparingly during the evening, Anita did a good job of noting the grammatical nuances of members and kept us on our toes!

During the Business Meeting, Julie inducted our two newest members: Mariam and Michelle. Congratulations to you both on now becoming bona fide members of Tillicum Toastmasters!

Good to see Brian again, this time as Table Topics Master. Reflecting on his time as Santa Claus in various malls, Brian came up with three hilarious scenarios in which would-be Santas may find themselves, and it was Julie who took home the Best Table Topics Speaker award for her vivid description of a Santa who had eyes for her mother-in-law – with unexpected results!! Nice work Julie!

Following the intermission we had three program speakers: Lourdes #8, John #4 and Michelle, who worked from the advanced manuals. Wonderful speeches from all three and John took the Best Speaker Award for his sincere description of angels who had impacted his life and quite literally saved him from certain death on a number of occasions. Maurice won the Best Evaluator Award for his evaluation of Michelle’s speech. Congratulations to all winners!

A reminder to the executive that we meet at the Plaskett Room on Wednesday, January 9 at 7 p.m. and there will be Division J officer training on Saturday, January 19.

Michelle will Chair our next meeting on January 14th, with the theme of Mothers-in-law – so sounds like a fun night!! Do help Michelle when she calls on you to fulfill roles and we hope to be back in our normal surroundings to enjoy the evening’s activities!

Best wishes,
