Meeting of Monday, September 29, 2008

We had a full house again tonight, and welcomed many members and guests, including our first-time guests Jessica and David, and returning guests Helen, Kumar, Lauren, Linda, and Luis. Maggie, the Area 80 Governor, also paid a surprise visit to the club and we thank you all for visiting and your very positive comments.

Tom, as our most capable Chair, led the meeting the theme of which was Sitcoms. Keeping to theme and on time, Tom demonstrated excellent bridging skills and offered lots of trivia on sitcoms of the past and present – oh how times have changed!!

Natalie in her role as Grammarian chose Predilection (n.) as the word of the day. Meaning: a tendency to think favorably of something in particular; partiality; preference. Example: “Joe’s predilection for TV sitcoms meant that in making a viewing choice he rarely selected a news show.” Voiced quite often during the evening, predilection proved to be a popular choice! Thanks Natalie for such a good breakdown of speaking faux pas during the evening!!

John, as our comical Table Topics Master, brought up five members who presented various scenarios relating to sitcoms. From the casting of Homer Simpson to selecting a psychiatrist for Frasier, it was Christine who won the Best Table Topics Award and delighted us all with her ideas as an image consultant describing how Sam and Woody from Cheers could develop their enterprise of a new bar environment! Well done Christine; great ideas and nicely paced!

Thanks Margot for standing in as Toastmaster and leading the second half of the meeting. We had three program speakers: both Andrea and Edwin delivered their first speech, the Ice Breaker, and Mariam spoke from the Advanced manual. There were especially good speeches from our newer members and Andrea and Mariam tied for the Best Speaker Award. Rosemary and John tied for the Best Evaluator Award for their evaluation of Andrea’s and Mariam’s speeches. Congratulations to all winners!
Tuesday,

Our next meeting is October 6, when Rod will chair with the theme Fall Memories.

Look forward to seeing you on the 6th, and please assist Rod when he calls on you to complete roles.
