Meeting of Monday, October 6, 2008

What a wonderful turnout of members and guests and thanks so much for visiting! Our first-time guests were Carol and Maureen’s guest George, and we were so pleased to greet Inas, Jane, Mariam and her son Abraham, and Maylan who represented the New Westminster chapter of Family Services of Greater Vancouver, in their project to give community leaders the tools to speak up for their communities. It was also good to see our returning guests Kumar and Luis; Luis has attended Speechcraft classes and has expressed a sincere interest in Tillicum. Again, many thanks for visiting!

Rod chaired
this October meeting with the appropriate theme of Fall Memories and did a good job of keeping the meeting to time and on subject, with excellent bridging!

Susan, as Grammarian, chose Procrastinate as the word of the day. Meaning: to defer action, to be dilatory and with the example of “Fall tends to enhance one’s inclination to procrastinate”, procrastinate was widely used during the evening. Thanks Susan for a great breakdown of our verbal strengths and weaknesses!

Michelle, as VP Membership, inducted Edwin, Lisa and Sanjeev into Tillicum Toastmasters. Congratulations to you and we look forward to helping you in your Toastmaster experience.

Julie stepped up to the plate as Table Topics Master and proffered five scenarios relating to Fall. Antonella, speaking of her first day at school when she was the only girl in a class of boys, won the Best Table Topics Award. Well done Antonella, and thanks again too to Rod for stepping into the role of Table Topics Evaluator.

On returning after the intermission, Lisa, our newly-inducted member, made a 3-minute presentation relating to her work. This was not her Ice Breaker and was not a manual speech, but it was an excellent opportunity for her to practice her speaking skills before making the presentation in mid-October. Thanks Lisa.

The two program speakers were Jennifer, with her Ice Breaker, and Mariam, with the 4th project in the Speaking to Inform advanced manual. This was an excellent first speech, without notes, from Jennifer and another great presentation from Mariam, who won the Best Speaker Award. John won the Best Evaluator Award for his evaluation of Mariam’s speech. Congratulations to all winners.

There is no meeting on October 13, which is Thanksgiving. However, please remember to vote in the Federal Election of October 14.

Michelle will chair the October 20th meeting with the theme Office Etiquette, so please assist Michelle when she calls on you to fulfill roles.

Our President suggested another PIZZA NIGHT on Monday October 27th prior to the meeting and this will be our last Club celebration before Christmas.

Best wishes,
