Thank you Rosemary for such a great job as Chair and for keeping the meeting on time!
We welcomed our two guests Gord, who made us a second visit and Vladimir, a first-time guest.
Neil, who had visited us twice and became a member on his second visit, was formally inducted. Congratulations Neil and welcome to Tillicum Toastmasters!
Alex as Grammarian came up with the wonderful word of the day (wod) Progenitor, meaning a direct ancestor or it could be used in the sense of an originator or founder. For instance, our progenitors were born in Scotland, or the Beatles were the progenitors of the Mersey Beat! Everyone mentioned the wod, and it was very interesting to see where our roots lie over the centuries.
We had a lengthy business meeting during which time Neil was inducted and Maureen received an award from a former Division J Governor, Laila, for winning at the Divisional Table Topics in October 2001. Everything comes to those who wait … even after three years!
Our lengthy meeting left room for only three table topics and Chris was our Master. Chris offered scenarios with good relationships to the word roots – Alex and his Scottish background – Barb giving a description of her root canal in Japan (cringe) and Hal with his wonderful vivid explanation of the “roots” he has growing in his garage! Just as well you can be hypothetical in table topics!!! Barb came away with the Best Table Topics Speaker award – well done!!
On to the three speakers of the evening: Mary K being faster than a speeding bullet in delivering her 7th speech, Grace with her 8th speech, and Maureen completing a fourth project in the Storytelling manual. Maureen won the Best Speaker award for her rendition of a Russian folk tale.
Excellent evaluations by Maurice, Colleen and George, with George walking off with the top prize for his evaluation of Maureen’s folk tale.
Comment should be made on Andrew in his first-time ever role as Timer. He took on this task and was tenacious, terrific and timely!! Well done Andrew, and well done Cristian in your first ever role as Toastmaster.
A good time was had by all, and we left reminding one another to appear at the BBQ/Picnic next Monday, August 16th at Queen’s Park!
Notes for your calendar:
August 16: Queen’s Park - 6.30 p.m.
August 23: My ideal vacation would be … - Chaired by Mary K
August 30: Chairman’s Choice – Chair to be announced
