Meeting of April 18, 2005

Maureen was our Chair for this evening, the theme of which was Technology – where’s it taking us?

We welcomed our former member Darryl on a short sojourn from Kamloops, and Joe, who has visited the club as a guest for the past month. Following completion of his application, we welcomed Joe as a member of Tillicum Toastmasters! We trust Joe that you will grow and learn with us, and enjoy the experience!

Alex substituted for Anita in the role of Grammarian, with the wonderful word Ergonomics: (L) ergo meaning work, and nomic meaning the study of = ergonomics means the study of work!. It is an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely – also called human engineering. An example sentence: The modern push-button telephone handset provides a good example of a relatively simple device that has required a great deal of ergonomic design or human-factors engineering. Wow!! - Used quite profusely during the course of the evening!

In Rosemary’s absence and based on her topics, Alex also took on the role of Table Topics Master. From Cavemen to “Beam Me Up Scottie”, technology was to the fore in this section. Congrats to Barb, who won the Best Table Topics Award for her very limber Egyptian-style translation of hieroglyphs that stole the show!

Mary won the Best Speaker Award and Maurice took home the Best Evaluator Award for evaluating her speech. Congratulations to you both!

Don’t forget that the Division J contest is at the Auditorium, New Westminster Public Library, on Wednesday, April 27th. Hope you can go along and enjoy the fun!

Please refer to the Calendar of Events and Assigned Roles because there’s lots in store at Tillicum!

See you on April 25th!
Best wishes,
