Meeting of Monday, May 16, 2005

Another wonderful turnout for our meeting this evening, and we welcomed our first-time guests Shantra, Matt and Yama and returning guest Kumar, with his son Naveen. We trust you all enjoyed the evening. As well, we were especially surprised and thrilled to see Leo, one of our members from some years ago. During last year Leo underwent extensive surgery and we hope you will continue to improve! It is so good to see you again and thank you for choosing to visit Tillicum and express an interest in re-joining our group!

Antonella, in her first-time role as Chair, did a magnificent job throughout the meeting with the theme: Seen any good movies lately? In answer, members and guests had seen movies on the silver screen and the small screen, and willingly discussed their likes and dislikes!

George as Grammarian chose for the Word of the Day, Pontificate (v. int.) meaning to speak in a pompous and dogmatic manner. Example: If we could remember that God doesn’t live in a church, temple, or mosque, there would be no need to preach to anyone, no need to save anyone’s soul. The best we can do is save ourselves and improve our own lives and/or after-lives. Imagine a world where we don’t feel a need to condemn anyone because “the book of my religion says so.” Now that I've done pontificating, let’s see this week a few words relating to (the word of the day). (Anu Garg).
Used wisely and widely and with variations, the word of the day was quite a hit!!

It was good to see Brian again, in his role of Table Topics Master. Keeping with the theme, five unsuspecting members were asked to speak on a variety of scenarios and it was Maureen (aka Marilyn Monroe) who walked off not only with an Oscar, but also with the Best Table Topics Award.

During the Business Meeting, the new election of officers for 2005-2006 took place; the following members form your new executive commencing July 1, 2005:

President: Rosemary
VP Education: Mary K (Neil as Associate)
VP Membership: Margot
VP Public Relations: Maureen
Secretary: Jarrod
Treasurer: Susan
Sergeant at Arms: Antonella (Troy as Associate)

The outgoing executive was thanked for their hard work and the new executive welcomed.

It was also mentioned during the Business Meeting that while at the District Conference in Victoria, the results of the web site contest were announced. Hart Toastmasters in Prince George won First Place, Speaker Hub in North Vancouver won Second Place, and our very own club, Tillicum, won Third Place. Division J really shone at the Conference, so Maureen was pleased to pass along this news to Tillicum members.

Barb as Toastmaster introduced Anita who had a special comment to bring awareness to the BC STV referendum. Barb then welcomed Neil to the lectern to deliver his 6th CTM speech “What’s In An Accent?” Beautifully delivered, notable in his rich Scottish brogue, Neil won the Best Speaker Award, and Maureen won the Best Evaluator Award for evaluating his speech. Congratulations to all winners!

For your diary: please note that the executive meeting for May has been changed to Tuesday, May 24, at Alex’s place. Don’t forget about the Night Out in June. Do let Maureen know the Wednesday nights in June when you are available so that one night can be determined for Schnitzel!

As usual, keep checking the Assigned Roles and Calendar of Events to see what’s ahead.

May 23rd is a holiday, so we shall meet back at Tillicum on Monday, May 30th.

Best wishes,
