Meeting of Monday, May 2, 2005

I attended the Community Impact Speakers meeting on May 2nd, and asked Alex, the President of Tillicum Toastmasters, if he would take notes on the meeting. My thanks to Alex for the following:

Tonight's meeting, with the theme In Praise of Mothers, was ably chaired by Mary K., who invited all of us to share maternal advice from our youth. In doing so, only a few people used the word of the day, mawkish, meaning "sickly sentimental". This sparse use of the WOD helped the Grammarian, Jarrod, collect money at the end of the evening after all the um's and ah's were counted!

As Table Topics Master, Andrew stuck to the Mother's Day theme. Five great table topics speeches ensued, with Maurice and Lydia sharing the Best Table Topics Award. Alex won Best Evaluator Award for his table topics evaluation.

Following the break, Toastmaster Maurice provided a touching toast to Mums and smoothly introduced the night's three speakers. Susan spoke eloquently about the importance of children playing instead of watching TV or playing computer games. Antonella gave some "common sense" advice on how to lose weight through reduced food intake and exercise. Andrew tapped into our emotions in discussing how pigs are turned into pork. Andrew's was voted as best speech of the evening. Barb, George and Carol provided great evaluations and feedback to the speakers.
Anita provided the night's detailed general evaluation.

The theme for May 9th is Connections, when Alex will chair. In preparation, think of any connections that are important to you: family ties, friends, e-mail, modes of transportation. Use your imagination!

As usual, keep checking the Assigned Roles and Calendar of Events to see what’s ahead.

See you on May 9th!
Best wishes,
