Meeting of Monday, September 19, 2005

Sorry for the delay in reporting on this meeting. The ‘flu bug that hit me on the 13th is only now on the wane, so I now have some energy to be in touch with you. May I particularly thank Alex for expressing his best wishes for a return to health, and most particularly for taking note of what happened on the 19th. Alex writes:

Our chairman, Alex, led us through a JOCULAR [the word of the day] and laughter-filled evening with the theme "It Really Makes Me Laugh". He even had some costume props to set the mood. He welcomed our guest David and returning guests, Leona, and Ken, who will be inducted soon.

During r
ound table introductions, we discovered that several members favour (1) British comedy and (2) weird humour. Does this translate into an appreciation of weird British humour? Neil provided us with inspiring words about laughter, reminding us that it is an essential "bodily function" which needs to be released. Thanks to our new members, Chris and Dave, who very ably took on the roles of Quizmaster and Jokemaster, respectively.

As
there were no program speeches tonight, we had two rounds of Table Topics, one led by Candace using her grab bag of odd household items and the other led by Toastmaster Maurice, who chose topics from the deck of Table Topics cards recently purchased by the club. In the first round, Candace chose Maurice as one of the speakers, so Maurice maliciously reciprocated in the second round. Both rose admirably to the occasion by winning their respective rounds of Table Topics! This must be a first in club history. The best evaluator award went to Anita for her detailed evaluation of the first round of Table Topics.

The meeting closed with George's insightful general evaluation followed by Ken's humorous closing thought on tonight's theme. In summary, a laughingly good time was had by all.

Just a reminder to everyone to sign up as a contestant or a helper in the upcoming Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests on October 3. Please let Neil know if you want to compete or fill one of the roles.

Thanks again Alex, and I will soon be updating the Assigned Roles and Calendar of Events for October to December. Don't forget that our Area Governor Matt will visit on September 26, and this is the last Monday before the deadline for membership renewal, so if you have not renewed, please do by the end of the month.

I really
hope I can be with you on the 26th - until then, take lots of Vitamin C and keep well!

Best wishes,
