Meeting of Monday, October 31, 2005

Some members were committed to Halloween activities yet we had quite a respectable turnout of members tonight and they were rewarded with a full and three-speaker agenda!! Some members arrived in costume and looked absolutely great – well done and thanks for getting into the Halloween spirit!

We welcomed our first-time guest Ikuko and returning guests Leona, Charlotte and Paul.

George was the most amiable Chair of the meeting, the theme of which was “Scary Stories”. Great job George and thanks for interspersing the meeting with ghoulish anecdotes contributed by Candace – although they did leaving us groaning!!

Our Grammarian was Troy (aka Erik the Viking) who, in full regalia, gave us the word of the day Specter (n.): something that haunts or perturbs the mind. Example: “The specter of nuclear war offers no peace.” With much frequency the word of the day was put to good use throughout the evening.

Carol as Table Topics Master gave a wonderful assortment of scenarios aptly grasped by five “unsuspecting” members, and both Chris F. and Troy tied for the Best Table Topics Award in relating their respective scary stories. Chris with his bungee jumping heart-stopping escapades and Troy, wielding an axe!!

As a pumpkin (black and orange with hair to match!), Anita was our Toastmaster and she introduced Ken and David C, both delivering their Ice Breakers. What a tremendous job by both of you – we certainly look forward to hearing subsequent speeches. The Best Speaker Award went to Mary, with her at times compassionate and hilarious account of “Chocolate Thunder” – please ask Mary about this one!!! Maureen won the Best Evaluator Award for her evaluation of David’s speech. Erik the Viking won the Best Costume Award (the most coveted Toastmaster Letter Opener) and well deserved!!
Congratulations to all winners.

Apart from her Advanced Manual Speech, Mary was also the General Evaluator and particular mention should be made of her reference to David A. our newest member (aka David Beckham!), who was inducted into Tillicum Toastmasters while also acting as the Business Chair. Mary described his performance as having “aplomb and dignity” – well done David!!

November lies ahead with lots of activities. Please try to attend the Division J Contest, 6:30 p.m. at the Auditorium, New Westminster Public Library on November 2nd to encourage and support the contestants!

Maureen will be in touch regarding Harry Potter, and the probable date is Sunday, November 20th at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Do join us on November 7th when Maurice will be Chair, and check the Assigned Roles and Calendar of Events to see what’s in store at Tillicum!

Best wishes,
Maureen
