Meeting of Monday, February 27, 2006

"Let the Games Begin!” hailed the Chair for the evening, Rosemary, as she banged the gavel at the start of tonight’s meeting, the theme of which was “What I thought of the Torino Olympics”. In her introductions, Rosemary welcomed our returning guest Shee – thanks again Shee for joining us this evening.

Troy C, one of our newest members in his first-time role of Grammarian, chose the word of the day: Zeal (n.): enthusiastic devotion to a cause, ideal or goal, and tireless diligence in its furtherance. Example: “He had absolute zeal for winning the gold!” Of course, an excellent choice to coincide with tonight’s theme and used consistently throughout the evening.

Alex, as Table Topics Master, came up with wonderful scenarios to present to four unsuspecting members, all with the Olympics in mind. The Best Table Topics Award went to Maurice for keeping us on our toes while he came up with a new sport that may make its Olympic debut in 2010 – cross-city swimming from Vancouver up to Whistler – depending on the weather, of course. Another fine example of turning the mundane into the extraordinary – complete with lots of stalling techniques that kept us waiting for this “mystery” sport.!

Terry gallantly delivered his Ice Breaker and Tom, in his first Competent Leader project, gave a wonderful explanation of the reasons for having a Mission Statement. Our speakers concluded with Susan, who charmed us all with her speech on letter writing and the personal touch, especially in our technological world of fast and furious e-mail, chat rooms, etc., for which she won the Best Speaker Award. Maurice made a second trip to the lectern to receive the Best Evaluator Award for his evaluation of Susan’s speech. Congratulations to all winners.

Don’t forget the International Speech and Evaluation Contests will be held on Monday, March 27 (please contact Rosemary if you wish to be a contestant or to assume a role) and we hope to get together for Sunday brunch on April 2nd, so please contact Maureen if you wish to attend.

Tom, in his first-time role as Chair, will lead the March 6th meeting, so please help him in filling roles.

Look forward to seeing you on the 6th!
Best wishes,
