We applauded Jim, who has visited the club several times and has become a member of Tillicum - so welcome Jim - we trust you will enjoy your stay with us!
Maurice very gallantly took on the role of Chair (in Colleen’s absence) and, with his usual charm and humour, led us through the meeting, the theme of which was “Beware the Ides of March – should we?” Bridging nicely from role to role we were informed of the history relating to the Ides and to the death of Julius Caesar at the hand of Brutus – hopefully nothing so dreadful will happen on the 15th!!
In fine keeping with the theme, Chris W was our diligent Grammarian and gave us the most appropriate word of the day: Heed (v.): to pay attention to; listen and consider. Example: “Julius Caesar did not heed the warning ‘Beware the Ides of March’.” Well used during the evening, we heeded good advice and left the meeting unharmed!!
Troy, as Table Topics Master, kept to the theme and presented five situations ranging from conspiracy to the movies, and it was John, with his hilarious explanation of conspiracy theories, who easily won the Best Table Topics Award. Mary with her eloquent evaluation of Table Topics won the Best Evaluator Award.
Three speakers tonight: Tom speaking from the Communicating on Television advanced manual in an editorial role, Susan presenting her 4th speech and Rosemary with one part of a Competent Leader delivery (not evaluated) provided excellent oratorical expertise, and the Best Speaker Award went to Susan, who entertained us with her culture shock in Malaysia. Congratulations to all winners.
More congratulations this evening: Both Mary and Tom have done a tremendous job at Speechcraft, and Rosemary presented them with certificates and Toastmaster Letter Openers as token gifts. As well, Grace and Susan attended Speechcraft so regularly and also received certificates for their participation.
Speaking of Mary, last Thursday, March 9 at the last evening of Speechcraft, she delivered the last speech to earn her Advanced Toastmaster Bronze award – so congratulations to you Mary on this wonderful achievement. This brings the club goals to eight, with number nine just around the corner! Well done Tillicum.
During the Business Meeting, Maureen – who is Chair of the Fall, 2006 Conference – motioned that Tillicum Toastmasters be the host club at the Conference, and this was voted on and unanimously agreed!!
John will chair the March 20th meeting, so please help him fill roles, because it’s all to do with Spring!!
