Meeting of Monday, June 26, 2006

A beautiful hot evening set the scene for tonight’s meeting and again we had a good turnout of members and guests. Our first-time guests: Cathy and her daughter Ellen, Joey, Len, and Sylvere, and our returning guests Carmen and Karen, commented that they enjoyed the meeting and we were glad that they chose to be with us when Nature beckoned to spend time outdoors – so thank you!!!

“In the Garden” was the oh-so-appropriate theme for the evening, chaired by Maureen. Sahra-Lea in her first-time role as Greeter was so kind to give gladioli bulbs to members and guests and this was such a sweet thought – so thanks again Sahra-Lea!

Jim took so well to the role of Grammarian and chose such an apt word of the day: Proliferate: to cause to grow or increase rapidly. Example, “Dandelions proliferate in my garden!” Well used in all sorts of context during the evening, the word of the day was a winner!

Lutz, our very competent Table Topics Master, offered five scenarios ranging from “How do you deal with the heat?” to “Types and colours of flowers you would choose for your home.” The latter question was beautifully answered by Antonella with such imagery, it is no wonder she won the Best Table Topics Award! Then Harvey, our most recent member, gave an in-depth and exemplary evaluation of the speakers. Great going to all Table Topics participants!

We took some time for a break and Grace should receive recognition here for her kindness in bringing in such delicious home-made cake for our enjoyment. Thanks Grace for your thoughtfulness.

We had two program speakers: Susan, speaking from the 7th project in the CTM manual, informed us so much on RSPs, and Tom, speaking from the 3rd project in the ATM Manual, took us through the six steps of the “Winning Proposal”. An excellent deliberation from Tom that earned him the Best Speaker Award, and Mary took home the Best Evaluator Award for her evaluation of Susan’s speech.

Speaking of awards, Tom won the Division J International Speech Contest in April and Maureen awarded him the beautiful plaque - so congratulations Tom on such an achievement!

A fun evening with lots of activity, enough to tie us over for two weeks until we meet on Monday, July 10 when Mary will be Chair and Camping Adventures the theme. Please help Mary fill roles for this meeting, and also advise Maureen if you wish to attend the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, the day before on July 9.

Enjoy the Canada Day long weekend, and see you on July 10th!

Best wishes,
