A wonderful turnout for our meeting, following the July long weekend! We welcomed our first-time guest Collette and returning guest Sylvere. Thank you both for joining us!
Two of our recent guests, Julie and Karen, joined Tillicum Toastmasters this evening! Thank you both for joining our club; we wish you much success and are here to help you in your Toastmaster experience!
Such an appropriate theme for this time of the year: Camping Adventures! Our meeting was so charismatically chaired by our newly-elected club President, Mary, and she came in camping garb including whistles that were used throughout the evening to add to the momentum!! Thanks Mary for your great efforts and also for the delicious S’mores that you made for our break!!
Lutz was our Grammarian who chose the word of the day: Trepidation (n.): fear, anxiety, unease, nervousness, apprehension, consternation. Example: “Elaine gritted her teeth in trepidation. She had to cross the swollen river to get to the campsite.” Used well throughout the evening (causing Lutz to blow his whistle every time!), Trepidation was a most appropriate choice for camping adventures.
Antonella, as a great Table Topics Master, offered five scenarios on the camping scene ranging from What did you forget to take on your trip to What do you think is the worst part of camping?? Brian, as the first contender, explained that he remembered to take his wife and children, but forgot his Legion card – such a disappointing turn to his camping adventures! However, he succeeded in winning the Best Table Topics Award to the delight of the crowd!!!
Harvey, a seasoned toastmaster and one of our newer members, was our program speaker for the evening. Working on his second CTM, he chose the 9th project in the CTM manual "Persuade with Power", and titled his speech "AIM to Win". An excellent speech in which he took AIM as an acronym and offered a counteraction:
A for Apathy: counter by appealing to the good
I for Ignorance: counter by supplying information
M for Misconception: counter by correcting wrong impressions
Great learning for us Harvey and well described, earning you the Best Speaker Award. Candace, as his excellent evaluator, won the Best Evaluator Award. Congratulations to all winners!
Mary, as President, offered for her Inspiration a presentation Team Effort in which she compared many aspects of camping and adventures to our role as a Toastmaster. Beginning with uncertainty and gradually learning to take chances, moving out of our “comfort zone” and into self-discovery, all brought her to the conclusion of her speech, and that is to be involved. Your involvement is requested, and in fact expected, in that Tillicum Toastmasters is the host club for the Fall Conference, 2006.
Maureen, as Conference Chair, has made presentations on this and continues to ask for your participation. Working on the conference team is exciting – it’s new, different, and offers many opportunities for you to grow and develop in roles outside of the club. Do consider joining the team! Do you have a marketing background or would like to be involved in marketing the conference, perhaps because you want the challenge??? How about working as Sergeant-at-Arms, which is so integral to the smooth running of the conference?
The conference team is well-established, and we have been meeting each month since March. July, August and September are typically vacation months, and once these are over it will be October and then the Conference is just around the corner – not too much time left to become involved!! We still need more help and volunteers, and what a beautiful venue in which to display your talents and know that you have contributed to a winning event! The theme is Metro Las Vegas, so with all the excitement that Las Vegas can bring, we will bring that too to Metrotown!!!
Please check out the newly-compiled Fall Conference 2006 web site: http://www.toastmasters.bc.ca/conf/2006-fall/ which, like the conference team, is a work in progress! A link to the web site is also included in the Links section.
Please contact Maureen for more information on the available roles of Marketing and Sergeant-at-Arms!
Susan will be our Chair for next week, the theme being BBQ Season – so please help Susan as she calls on you to fill roles.
Look forward to seeing you on July 17th!
Best wishes,
