Meeting of Monday, August 28, 2006

Another fun evening in which we welcomed our guests Donna and Anup. Thank you for visiting and glad to hear you enjoyed the meeting and hope to return.

Fairy Tales was the theme of the evening, our Chair being Grace, who graced the evening with her informal approach and pleasantries.

One of our newest members, Karen, was the Grammarian and chose a very appropriate word of the day: Enchanted (adj.) meaning bewitched, captivated, charmed, and delighted. Example: “She was so enchanted with fairy tales that she became a children’s storyteller” - an easy-to-use word that found its way quite often into our vocabulary.

During the Business Meeting we voted on an and inducted three new members: Ann, Julie and James. Congratulations on being welcomed into Tillicum Toastmasters; we will help you on your journey!

We also voted on, congratulate and welcome Karen to the executive in the role of Treasurer. Karen steps into the role vacated by Slavica, whom we thank for her input and attending officer training. The executive looks forward to working with you Karen and thanks you for your enthusiasm and willingness to move ahead in Toastmasters, at such an early stage in your membership - well done!

Following this, Area 80 Governor, our own Tom, spoke on the nature of his bi-annual visits to the clubs within Area 80, what he looks for in the clubs and how he helps clubs achieve their Distinguished Club Program (DCP) goals. Tillicum, as one of the strongest clubs in Division J and, in fact, District 21 (British Columbia), is the club on which he sets his model. Tom has been Area Governor since July 1, 2006, and we thank him for his expertise.

Anita was well-prepared in her role as Table Topics Master and called upon four members, including our mint-new members, and Lutz. It was Julie who enchanted us all with her fairy tale, and won the Best Table Topics Award.

After the break, we heard three program speakers: Ken, Rosemary and Tom. Rosemary took home the Best Speaker Award for her oratorical speech on Emily Pankhurst, the most militant of suffragettes, and her quest for women’s rights to vote. Maurice, as Rosemary’s evaluator won the Best Evaluator Award. Congratulations to all winners!

There is no meeting on September 4, as this is the Labour Day holiday. Ken will be Chair for the next meeting on Monday, September 11, 2006, so please help him as he calls on you to fulfill roles.

CONFERENCE NOTE:
Recently, Maurice offered to take on the role of Chair, Sergeant-at-Arms/Volunteers and the conference team is glad to have his expertise. Pleased to report that both Grace and Margot, also long-time members of Tillicum, have volunteered as co-Chairs, Hospitality, and I thank them for their input. Just a reminder that we are the host club for the Conference and I would encourage members of Tillicum to volunteer during November 17-19; it will be a fun weekend and you have the opportunity to partake in one of the largest and anticipated events in the Toastmaster year! Please contact Maurice over the next few weeks and we can talk about your role, during October.

On September 11th I leave for a two-week vacation in England, returning late evening, Monday, September 25. Tom has kindly offered to make a note of award winners and the web site will be updated to reflect this, upon my return.

Enjoy September! See you in October!
Best wishes,
