Meeting of Monday, October 23, 2006

A different type of evening was in store for us in that we had a modified debate and this was anticipated for the second half of the evening. Tom was our very able Chair and led the meeting with snippets of trivia on the topic of debating. While debates have taken place at Tillicum, they are not a regular occurrence, so we waited with bated breath to see how this latest attempt would work out!

Ann, one of our newer members, took on the role of Grammarian and chose the word of the day: Obfuscate, meaning to make dark or obscure; confuse. Example: “The politician, not wishing to be caught out, was known to obfuscate his remarks.” Not always easy to pronounce, this word and its derivatives found itself on the lips of most of our members and was well used. Thanks Ann!

Lutz presented as Table Topics Master and chose four “hopefuls” to put to them situations ranging from Why cats are superior to dogs, to Cars versus transit. Another new member, Sheila, received the Best Table Topics Award for her response to the Inadequacy of the education system. Great going Sheila; you’re probably in the running for other Table Topics events!!

After the break came the debate. Three Pros and Three Cons discussed the question Should Canada and the United States join to form one country?? Charged with enthusiasm, statistics, likes and dislikes, this band of debaters went at it with great gusto. Lots of humour entwined the seriousness of the subject and the winning team, by only one point, was the Cons. Great debate topic and well handled by both teams!

Next week is the eve of Halloween – so join us for Fright Night and help Lutz as he calls on you to fill roles – a frighteningly awful costume is also appropriate, so have some fun and join in the activities!!

Don’t forget about the Conference, just three weeks away. Lots to be done, so please contact Maurice, who is Sergeant at Arms/Volunteers, and help him as he puts together his teams of trusty volunteers!!

See you on the 30th!
Best wishes,
