Meeting of Monday, October 30, 2006

It was a dark and very cold night ..... but that didn't deter the warm spirits of the many who attended this night-before-Hallowe'en meeting. Thanks to you all for attending and to our first-time guest, Anne, who enjoyed her visit; we hope to see you again!

Lutz, as our very genial Chairperson, led the meeting the theme of which was Fright Night! Nothing too scary to report and even Rosemary as a scarecrow looked charming!! Love the hat (including hair)!!

Margot as Grammarian delivered the word of the day: Bilk (v) definition: to cheat out of something valuable; defraud. Example: "I've been bilked of my food rights as a human member of this family!" protested Jason, when he heard the dog had been given the last hamburger." Used quite regularly during the evening, no one was bilked out of their enjoyment!

Antonella our innovative Table Topics Master, passed around a witch's hat (with long flowing orange hair), that contained pieces of paper marked 1 to 5. The five who picked out these little jewels were headed for some frightening scenarios with a haunted theme to them. Well done Antonella, on your forethought and preparation.

Mary won the Best Table Topics Speaker for her rendition of her design for a haunted house. Taken from life experiences, Mary explained how her father rigged the door bell to howl when unsuspecting trick or treaters visited their large rambling residence!!

Following the break, we returned to hear two program speakers, Julie and Harvey (who stepped in at the last moment). "Production Paradox" was the title of Julie's delivery that spoke on the inclusion of e-mail in our workaday lives and whether or not production has increased or decreased with this aspect of technology. You spoke on a topic to which we can all relate Julie; well done for winning the Best Speaker Award and on moving through the Communication and Leadership manual so early in your Toastmaster experience!

Rosemary won the Best Evaluator Award for evaluating Harvey's speech. Congratulations to all winners.

Please don't forget to support Antonella this Thursday, November 2, at the Division J Contest in the Library in New Westminster. Antonella represents Area 80 in the Table Topics Contest and we wish you every success. It would be great to see Tillicum as the winning club at the District Conference, as Tillicum is the host club.

Please attend the Conference - there is so much to see and do, eat, drink and be merry as we celebrate Metro Las Vegas at the Hilton Metrotown, November 17-19. As well, please contact Maurice, our Sergeant-at-Arms/Volunteer Chair, to help in whatever way you can during the conference. This is a wonderful learning experience for you in a fun and lively environment!!

Next week the theme is My Favourite Detective! Sounds like a great evening, so please help Harvey as our Chair, when he calls on you to fill roles. Lots happening so do come along!

See you on November 2nd!
Best wishes,
