Meeting of Monday, January 22, 2007

Another good turnout of members and guests, and we welcomed our first-time guests Kim and Steven, and returning guest Tracey. Thank you so much for attending and for your positive comments. We look forward to welcoming you at future meetings.

In her first-time role as Chair, Julie did an excellent job of chairing the meeting, the theme being Puzzles and Games. Nicely done Julie, with a good pace, keeping to theme and keeping the meeting to time.

Nice to see Brian again, this time in his role as Grammarian, and he enlightened us with the word of the day: Soporific (adj.): mind-numbing or sleep inducing. Example: “The Prime Minister’s speech was so boring it had a soporific affect on the speakers of the House!” Soporific was very well applied during the evening, especially in Roundtable and Table Topics. Good choice Brian – thinking of how to incorporate soporific kept us awake!

During the Business Meeting, Carol asked the members to vote on two new members, Michelle and Albert, prior to their induction. They were accordingly inducted into Tillicum Toastmasters, so Welcome to Tillicum, and we wish you much success in your Toastmaster experience!

Impromptu speaking, otherwise known as Table Topics, was very ably mastered by Antonella, who presented five scenarios geared to the evening’s theme. These ranged from what games to play in a remote cabin in the woods, to what is your favourite game show for brain power? Brian easily walked away with the Best Table Topics Award for his humorous description of how to entertain three people on a desert island – especially when two of them are his grandchildren!

Three program speakers this evening, Albert, Tom and Rosemary. Albert was so brave to attempt his Ice Breaker at his second visit to the club – so kudos to you Albert; keep up the good work! Tom started on his ATM-Silver, and Rosemary, who is already ATM-Silver, is working through her second CTM. Nice work to all speakers and especially Tom, who won the Best Speaker Award. The Best Evaluator Award went to Maurice, for his evaluation of Albert’s speech. Congratulations to all winners!

Thanks too to Rosemary who later advised Maureen that she wishes to help on the Birthday Committee celebrations for April 2 and 16. Maurice and Maureen head this committee, so please join us as we work towards preparing some fun times for both dates!

Tom begins Speechcraft this coming Thursday, January 25 at New Westminster Secondary School; please contact Tom to assist him during the next eight weeks - such a learning experience for you.

Ken
will Chair the next meeting on January 29: My Favourite Winter Spot – so put your warm thinking caps on for this one and help Ken fill the needed roles!!

See you on the 29th!
Best wishes,
