Meeting of Monday, January 15, 2007

The promise of snow later in the evening did not deter another excellent turnout of members and guest at this meeting! Thank you all for visiting, especially our first time guests: Kim, Karl and Albert, and returning guests Alicia, Mitra and Vic. Thanks too for your comments and compliments! We look forward to seeing you at our meetings in the coming weeks.

Sometimes our guests feel intimidated because they feel that “they can never do that” when seeing the capabilities of our members. Please don’t feel that way; after all, that’s what Toastmasters offers you – the ability to “do that” – to speak confidently and to think clearly. You are capable of presenting yourself confidently and purposefully; this is what happens in self-development and stepping out of a comfort zone, and we all have the ability to do this and achieve our objectives. Members can certainly relate to any fears you encounter and will help you overcome them. It takes time but with time and encouragement, you will succeed.

Albert, our first-time guest, did exactly this and completed his membership form and payment! Thank you Albert for joining up straightaway, and welcome to Tillicum! Not only that, he wants to do his Ice Breaker on January 22nd, so congratulations on starting to achieve your goals! Well done!

Vic, who completed Speechcraft, also kept his promise and completed his membership form and payment! Thank you too Vic, and welcome to Tillicum! We look forward to helping you work through your projects and achieve your goals.

To our new members, please check the Assigned Roles to see the mentors who will work with you.

Now to our meeting … Carol, our most amiable and capable Chair, led the meeting, the theme of which was the ever-so frightening “Murder Mystery”. Excellent bridging and humor turned this into a great evening of fun and, need I say, Mystery!

Margot as Grammarian gave us the appropriate word of the day: Skulk (v.): to move about in a stealthy way, to lurk, to move furtively. Example: “Someone was seen sulking around the house before the murder occurred!” Very few were afraid to skulk, because the word of day was used frequently during the evening as well as in Table Topics – quite a feat!

Speaking of Table Topics, one of our newest members, Lily, gallantly took on the role of Table Topics Master and was well prepared with five scenarios presented to unsuspecting victims. Her questions ranged from “How would you research the role of a killer?” to “How would you present a murder mystery at a dinner party?” Wonderful presentations and most particularly by our very own Maurice (aka Lieutenant Colombo) who, with cigar (in the shape of a pen) in hand, meticulously took us through the scene of a crime and in solving it walked off with the Best Table Topics Award – congratulations Maurice, Hollywood awaits!!

Due to sickness, we had no program speakers, but Carol came to the rescue with a Murder Mystery of her own and included all the members and guests. We should do this more often! Two bags of assorted items were passed among members and with these we created a unique, incredible and at times totally amazing and uproarious set of circumstances to find out who committed the dastardly crime that Carol laid out for us!! Great way to enjoy a night of suspense!

A note to members: did you know that Tillicum will soon be 45 years old?? On April 2, 2007 we will hold a Birthday Party and on April 16 will host the Division J Contest, all to celebrate Tillicum’s great age!! We are looking for several members to form a “birthday committee” and Maurice and Maureen have agreed to lead the way – so please follow their lead and extend your leadership skills to the committee. Please contact Maureen to offer your services to make April a true birthday month for the club!

Thanks to our Executive officers who attended training on January 11th. We now have reached eight goals and with just one more will become a President's Distinguished Club!!

Look forward to seeing you next week:Julie is Chair so please help her fill the meeting roles in this, her first opportunity as Chair. The theme is Puzzles and Games, so sounds like fun!

See you on the 22nd!
Best wishes,
