Another full meeting night, at which we welcomed our first-time guest Ellen; thank you Ellen for your cheery words of praise, and we look forward to again seeing you at the club!
Accent Night was the theme for this meeting, and we do thank Rosemary for taking on the role of Chair on relatively short notice. Well done for providing such humour and talent and you brought the world to our doorstep in a variety of accents! Rosemary kept the meeting to time and used excellent bridging between roles. Great job!
Rod in his first-time role as Grammarian did an excellent job and gave us the rather unknown word of the day: Polemic (n.) meaning verbal attack, controversial discussion. Example: “The response to involvement of the US in the Iraq war is polemical.” Used on occasion, this word of the day certainly kept us on our toes! Thanks Rod for being such a conscientious Grammarian!
Table Topics Master Lutz called on five “victims” and merged the theme of accents into one of travel, and presented scenarios ranging him “Backpacking through Thailand to Difference between English and Scottish men”! Such a humorous variety and congratulations to Julie for outlining her Scottish and English heritage resulting in a very well delivered Best Table Topics Award!
Tom and Michelle were our two program speakers, Tom delivering the 3rd speech towards his CCS award (Competent Communicator – Silver) and Michelle, delivering her 7th speech towards her Competent Communicator goal. Michelle is quite a new member to the club, and having completed six speeches at Speechcraft, this speech was the first at the club level. “Chinese New Year” was the title and she delivered an excellent speech to explain the history and celebrations surrounding this event. The Year of the Pig begins on Sunday, February 18 – so Gung Hay Fat Choy: "Best wishes and Congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year" to you Michelle, and congratulations on winning the Best Speaker Award! Congrats too to Maurice for winning the Best Evaluator Award for his evaluation of Tom’s speech.
Please let Maureen know if you wish to attend the Elvis evening on Saturday March 3 – tickets sell quickly for this very entertaining evening!
Tom will chair next week’s meeting, the theme “When we were kids” – so please assist him in filling roles, and let’s spend some time reminiscing over childhood days!
See you on February 19th!
