Meeting of Monday, May 28, 2007

Following a two-week break we had a very good turnout of members and welcomed our returning guests Abby and Brian. Thanks for visiting and glad to hear you enjoyed the evening. We again welcomed Gertrude, who had been a Toastmaster in the Philippines and has visited Tillicum now that she has the opportunity to resume her TM roles and wants to work on her bronze accreditation. Gertrude joined Tillicum this evening; we congratulate you and look forward to hearing your progression through the advanced manuals!

Due to Brian’s unfortunate absence, Lutz took on the role of Chair for this meeting, the theme being Masks. Lutz is an accomplished toastmaster and we thank him for an excellent job of running the meeting and keeping it to theme!

Rosemary as Grammarian chose Inscrutable (adj.) as the word of the day. Meaning wholly mysterious, impenetrable, Rosemary elected a quote from Jane Austen, as an example: “He gave me an inscrutable look from behind his mask.” Used quite often throughout the evening, inscrutable found its place in the many descriptions of masks that the members and guests discussed. Thanks Rosemary; great word!

Tom treated us to an Educational Session, this time on the rudiments of speaking, especially introducing your speech. Some great motivational openings, lots of humor, and another great educational session from Tom, as he makes his way towards his ACSilver! Well done, and look forward to more education from our current VP Education, and soon to be Divison B Governor!

Lily did a wonderful job as Table Topics Master creating five scenarios for the members to portray. Brad, who recently became a member, won the Best Table Topics Award and did a superb job for one who is so new to being called upon at a moment’s notice!

The program speaker this evening was Albert who delivered his 8th speech, entitled Existentialism – what a broad subject and one on which Albert is so knowledgeable. This project works with visual aids and we had lots of information to see and absorb. Albert won the Best Speaker Award and Lydia the Best Evaluator Award for her evaluation of Albert’s speech. Congratulations to all winners!

Ken is our Chair next week the theme being: Life on Other Planets; please assist him as he calls on you to fill roles.

Looks like we will be going to see Moon Over Buffalo on Friday, June 8. Please advise Maureen should you wish to attend; the more the merrier!
Hope to see you on June 4, and with best wishes!
