Meeting of Monday, October 22, 2007

Theatre Sports was the theme of this meeting, at which we welcomed our first-time guests Christine, and Francisco and his wife Kattia. It was good to see Corry, our returning guest and thanks for visiting us and for your warm comments. We look forward to seeing you at future meetings.

With Maurice as Chair, we looked forward to a fun-filled meeting, and were not disappointed! Leading the way with Theatre Sports, Maurice kept the very full meeting to time and to agenda.

John, as Grammarian, offered Extemporize (v.) as the word of the day. Meaning to improvise; to perform without prior preparation or practice a good example is: “To be good at Table Topics you must extemporize to the best of your ability!” Spoken to some extent during the evening, extemporize has founds it home in our continuing vocabulary. Nice job John – easy to see you enjoy your role!

Wendy, in her first-time role as Table Topics Master, took the initiative to bring up “contestants” in pairs, to act out as in theatre sports, scenarios including descriptions of going skiing and describing feelings. Both Antonella and Brad took home the Best Table Topics Award for their hilarious depiction of a husband and wife at the mall, but Brad was the wife and Antonella the husband – remarkably funny and well done Wendy for this nuance in Table Topics!

Lourdes in her first-time role as Toastmaster also did a good job and introduced three program speakers: Rod, working through his CC, Susan, embarking on her ACB and Michelle who is just three speeches away from completing her AC Bronze. Three very good speeches and Michelle, who spent 25 minutes in her seminar presentation of teaching us Cantonese, took the Best Speaker Award; nicely done Michelle and the same to Maureen, who won the Best Evaluator Award for her evaluation of Michelle’s speech.

Just a reminder that we will have pizza at 6:45 p.m. next Monday, October 29 – so do come along to enjoy this Halloween treat! Colourful cookies await you during the intermission!

With Halloween as the theme, Julie will chair the October 29 meeting, so please help her when she calls on you to fill roles.

See you on the 29th!
Best wishes,
