Meeting of Monday, April 14, 2008

Another wonderful turnout and we welcomed our first-time guest David, who has recently moved to the Lower Mainland from Saskatchewan. Welcome to BC, David, and thank you for your warm comments.

Rosemary was our very able Chair this evening and she chose a great theme: Guinness World Records. Thanks for excellent bridging with lots of trivia throughout the evening, and keeping the meeting to time and on theme.

Michelle L. as Grammarian, chose the ever-so-popular word of the day: Eminent (adj.) meaning distinguished or notable. Example: “Abraham Lincoln was an eminent speaker.” Used very often during the evening, eminent was a very appropriate word for this theme. Well done Michelle!

Antonella took the reins as Table Topics Master and chose the unusual step of asking people to pick a slip of paper from a bag containing numbers 1 to 5; those with the numbers were called upon, while the “numberless ones” breathed a sigh of relief! Great situations related to World Records and individual aspirations to achieving their own records. Mariam was voted as the Best Table Topics Speaker, and was so eloquent in describing herself as the kindest person in the world! Nice going Mariam!

We had two program speakers: Rod, embarking on the Speaking to Inform manual delivered project #1 and in complete contrast, Susan gave us an almost 20-minute rendering of a story. Excellent storytelling qualities and Susan also looked the part, being dressed in check shirt, coveralls and straw hat – complete with a down-home accent; Susan clearly won the Best Speaker Award, while Lutz won the Best Evaluator Award for his evaluation of Susan’s speech. Congratulations to all winners.

Only one more meeting to go before we join Peter Legge at the Canadian Club dinner on April 22, so still time for you to consider this rare occasion – great value for a three-course meal and guest speaker – only $23, so please contact Maureen, as time is running out!

Look forward to seeing you on April 21, when Maurice is Chair and the theme: Relationships!

Best wishes,
