Meeting of Monday, June 30, 2007

Celebrations! Was the theme of the evening, chaired by Maureen. Our meeting was prefaced by Pizza, enjoyed by all and a great way to start the evening!

We welcomed our returning guests: Mariam’s husband Daryl and her mother Nita, Ging Ging’s friend Ling, who is also a member of Burrard Toastmasters, and Marsene and Stephen. Thank you all so much for visiting and for your comments and support.

Returning this evening was Christine M. who attended as a guest some time ago and then became a member of Speechcraft, from which she graduated two weeks ago! Christine decided to join Tillicum Toastmasters and presented her payment and completed application form. Congratulations Christine and welcome to Tillicum Toastmasters – your membership will begin July 2008, and you’re our first new member of this new Toastmaster year!

Brad as Grammarian chose Revelry (n.) as the word of the day, meaning noisy partying or merrymaking, with the example “Our climate action dividend cheque was met with much revelry!” It seemed as though everyone included Revelry in their chat, and it was a most appropriate word for tonight’s theme; well done Brad!

During the Business Meeting chaired by our outgoing president Susan, a number of celebratory pins for achievements were handed out, and we congratulate the following:

Michelle L. AC-B; Maurice AC-S; Lutz AC-G; Rosemary AC-G; Maureen DTM; and Tom DTM.
Unfortunately, Rosemary and Tom could not attend tonight’s meeting and Tom was also awarded a Certificate for his ongoing involvement with Speechcraft – these awards are awaiting presentation.

Mariam was presented with the gift of a letter opener for bringing the most guests to meetings! We congratulate these members on their excellent achievements!

Susan then thanked and discharged the outgoing executive and swore in and welcomed the incoming executive. Nice job Susan!

Brian, as Table Topics Master, kept to the celebratory theme and chose five "contestants” to speak on a variety of topics ranging from an historical character in British Columbia 150 years ago to advising against eating Pizza – but it was Christine V. our latest member and Christine M. our not-even-inducted member, who stole the show by acting out as soccer fans in Euro2008!! Nice going to both Christines on winning the Best Table Topics Speaker Award, and an excellent way to wrap up this year! Great job as usual Brian!

Following the break (thanks again Lourdes for your gift of donuts!) there were two program speakers: Rod with #3 project AC-B and Michelle L. with #5 project AC-S. Michelle won the Best Speaker Award and Maurice the Best Evaluator Award for his evaluation of Michelle’s speech. Congratulations to all winners!

Reminders for Sunday, July 6: handover meeting at Susan’s home for outgoing and incoming executive

No meeting on June 30 due to the Canada Day holiday on July 1st, so our next meeting is Monday, July 7. Rosemary will chair with the theme of A Day at the Beach, so please help in completing the role schedule.

Enjoy the Canada Day holiday!

Best wishes,
