Meeting of Monday, June 9, 2008

What an enormous turnout of members and guests! We particularly thank our first-time guests Irish, Helena, James, Stephen, and Vicky (from Surrey Toastmasters) and our returning guest Marsene. As well, we were so pleased to see members of the current Speechcraft Program: Christine, Cindy, Dave, Marva, and Patricia. Thanks so much for visiting and enjoying this great evening!

Lutz was our most amiable Chair who relished the theme of the evening: Hairstyles of Old! Lots of comments and descriptions on this one, and Lutz kept the meeting to theme and on time, with great bridging between roles.

Lourdes, as Grammarian, chose Retro (adj.) as the word of the day, describing a past culture. In terms of hairstyle, “retro” is defined as from the last century, i.e. 1900-1999. Example: “In recent years we have occasionally seen modern stars wearing retro hairdos, as they walk the red carpet.” Used in conjunction with other lifestyles of years gone by, retro certainly found its place during the meeting vocabulary. Nice job Lourdes!

Mariam, as Table Topics Master, kept to theme and offered five scenarios related to hair and hair products! Tom, with his usual humourous charm, described in detail how to change cavemen who drag their wives by the hair as a sign of affection, to our more modern way of hand-holding! Funny and versatile!

Speaking of Tom, congratulations on achieving his Distinguished Toastmaster Award a few weeks ago! He was presented with a club certificate and badge and shortly will receive his certificate and exquisite plaque from Toastmasters International! Well done Tom to reach such an accomplishment in a relatively short time - you set your goals and kept them, and your hard work and tenacity paid off!

There were two program speakers: Michelle L., speaking from the advanced manual, and Maureen, delivering a speech first performed in August 2007 at another club, when starting her AC Gold. Brad and Margot evaluated Michelle and Maureen respectively and tied for the Best Evaluator Award, while Maureen won the Best Speaker Award. Incidentally, Maureen’s “Read Out Loud” project was “Death by Scrabble or Tile M for Murder” and written by author Charlie Fish. Please Google or Yahoo “Death by Scrabble” to see the many entries for this short story written by a man, but Maureen took some poetic licence in turning it into a woman’s role to try and achieve her deadly deed!

Congratulations to all winners!

Just a reminder that PIZZA NIGHT will be held on the last meeting of this Toastmaster Year: Monday, June 23, 2008 - we will have pizza about 6:45 p.m. and be ready to start the meeting at 7:30 p.m., so please try and attend our year-end meeting!

Next week, June 16, do try to come in your funniest hat to keep in line with the evening’s theme. John will be your Chair, so please help him, as he calls on you to complete roles.

Look forward to seeing you on the 16th!

Best wishes,
