TILLICUM TOASTMASTERS CONTINUES TO BE A PRESIDENT'S DISTINGUISHED CLUB!

Meeting of Monday, October 20, 2008

A very full house this evening complemented a very full agenda! We welcomed our first-time guests Kelly, Binh and Steadwick, and returning guests George and Kumar. It was also good to see John’s wife Brenda visit us at the club. Thanks so much for attending and adding to the joy of the evening, and we thank you for your warm supportive comments.

Luis, who attended Speechcraft earlier this year has visited the club recently and, true to his word, completed his application form and submitted payment for membership! Welcome to Tillicum and we will work with you Luis to enhance your Toastmaster experience. George, on this his second visit to the club, also completed his application form and submitted payment, so we welcome you too George and know we will have lots of fun working with you at Tillicum Toastmasters!

This brings to 12 the number of new members since July 1, 2008 – quite a record and we thank our newer members for their valuable contribution.

Michelle P. was our most amiable and competent Chair for this evening, managing to keep the very full agenda on theme (Office Etiquette) with good bridging throughout. Thanks Michelle for handling such a daunting task!

Margot, as Grammarian, chose the most appropriate Decorum (n.) as the word of the day. Meaning: propriety in manners or conduct and with the example “It is wiser to behave with decorum at the office party”, decorum was widely and efficiently used throughout the evening!! Thanks Margot!

Lutz took on the role of Timer using a Blackberry (anyone seen the two stopwatches?) and we thank him for his prowess in keeping the agenda on time, which was so necessary with many roles taking place.

Julie gave a 15-minute Education Session on Mentoring; excellent Julie and much food for thought regarding the roles of mentor and mentee.

Christine V. was the very capable Table Topics Master this evening and due to time constraints called on only four members to relate scenarios applicable to Office Etiquette. Wonderful performances from Antonella, Andrea and Dennis, and Maureen won the Best Table Topics Award (beware anyone who jams the photocopier!!). Thanks to Lourdes for her evaluation of Table Topics; good coverage with growth points for all speakers.

Luis, as a new member, asked if he could deliver to the club a presentation he plans to present to business associates relating to his company. This was not a manual speech and did not receive a direct evaluation, but the members gladly offered their thoughts and suggestions on his speech, and we wish him much success with his developing business.

Following the intermission, Andrea took on the role of Toastmaster and did an admirable job!! Thanks Andrea for your enthusiasm and quick thinking! Andrea introduced three program speakers: Sanjeev, with his Ice Breaker (absolutely remarkable!) and Natalie, delivering a heartwarming Toast from the advanced manual.

John delivered the 10th project in the Competent Communication manual and has now achieved the level of Competent Communicator. Congratulations John on reaching your goals. Not only do we congratulate you but we offer you our very best wishes for continued good health. John spoke of his diagnosis for a liver transplant and presented a poignant yet humorous speech on the events leading up to his operation and his recovery. What a magnificent speech and we thank you for inspiring us and suggesting that we visit
http://www.transplant.bc.ca/index.asp - well done John and congratulations on winning the Best Speaker Award. Maureen won the Best Evaluator Award for her evaluation of John’s speech.

Next week, October 27, we will preface the meeting with PIZZA NIGHT! Members and guests alike, please arrive at the club about 6:30 p.m., so we can enjoy pizza and chit chat before beginning the meeting at 7:30 p.m. To those members who are sick, please get well soon and come and enjoy Pizza Night with us!

Mariam will Chair the meeting with the theme Fictional Characters, so please assist her when she calls on you to fill roles.

Look forward to seeing you on the 27th,
Best wishes,
