Meeting of Monday, November 10, 2008

Another excellent turnout with our returning guests Ling and Grace, and Toastmaster Harvey Martens and his guest Cheng both from Vancouver Entrepreneurs Toastmasters club. Thanks so much for visiting and we enjoyed your positive input.

Kumar, who has visited as a guest, submitted his completed application form and payment, and we welcome you to Tillicum Toastmasters and look forward to helping you in your Toastmaster experience!

A somber and appropriate theme, Remembrance Day, for our meeting, which was so well led by Lutz. Thanks for your eloquent contributions and bridging throughout in lending our thoughts to the tremendous gratitude that we owe to our forces of current and former wars throughout the world; truly a remarkable meeting.

Andrea, as Grammarian, chose Capitulate as the word of the day. Meaning to surrender under specific conditions, Andrea gave the example: “The CEO capitulated to the demands of the union.” Capitulate and its derivatives were well included in the context of tonight’s meeting and a great job Andrea on your role!

During the Business Meeting, Lutz as Business Chair, reminded the membership that we are a semi-annual club and will therefore hold elections at the November 17 meeting in which the current executive can indicate if they wish to remain in their roles and the membership is also encouraged to nominate themselves or others for executive positions. If you wish to be considered as a member of the executive, now is a good opportunity to put your name forward!

Antonella, as Table Topics Master and a role she much enjoys, offered five excellent scenarios all relating to tonight’s theme and well conducted by all participants. Maureen won the Best Table Topics Award.

Following the break, Julie as Toastmaster introduced Harvey Martens to speak on Evaluation and also introduced the two program speakers. Prior to listening to the speakers Harvey gave an in-depth description of what to look for when evaluating and we thank him for his forté and insight. Harvey posed questions to the membership on evaluating who, in turn, gave verbal evaluations of the speakers. There was no Best Speaker Award.

The two speakers were Natalie, a seasoned speaker who posed as a new member delivering her second project and Mariam, who delivered a final project from her advanced manual, and which was recorded as a manual speech. Excellent deliveries of two varying styles of speech from both speakers and we thank you for your presentations.

We thank Susan for offering to chair the November 17 meeting in John’s absence. Susan has chosen Personal Growth as the theme of the meeting, and this is very much in keeping with our aspirations as Toastmasters! Please help Susan when she calls on you to fill roles.

November 17 should be an exciting meeting with much to discuss and we look forward to seeing you!

Best wishes,
Maureen
